Morocco joins second political conference on peace, security, and development nexus in Mombasa
Morocco is actively participating in the second Political Conference addressing the crucial nexus between peace, security, and development, held on July 11 and 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This significant conference builds upon the foundation laid by the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which convened in Tanger from October 25 to 27, 2022. That initial gathering culminated in the landmark Tanger Declaration, a document that firmly established a comprehensive African perspective on this interconnected relationship. Its core principles emphasize coordinated public policies, strengthened partnerships, and the execution of tangible projects designed to foster lasting peace, robust security, and sustainable development across the African continent.
The Tanger Process has solidified its position as the continent’s foremost platform for dialogue concerning the vital interdependence of peace, security, and development throughout Africa. This initiative brings together key continental and international stakeholders committed to this area, including the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.
The primary objective of this second conference is to thoroughly assess the progress achieved in actualizing the Tanger Declaration’s mandates. Furthermore, it seeks to pinpoint actionable operational strategies that can further solidify the peace, security, and development nexus across Africa.
Discussions at the conference are structured across five distinct panels. These sessions delve into critical topics such as the practical implementation of the Tanger Declaration through specific thematic projects, the transformative role of artificial intelligence and youth-driven innovations, the intricate link between security expenditures and development outcomes, strategies for mobilizing essential funding for Nexus projects, and crucial lessons learned from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions.
During the proceedings, the Moroccan delegation, led by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, will articulate Morocco’s comprehensive vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, underscored by strengthening partnerships and championing African-led solutions that genuinely address the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
