The Republic of Congo Seizes the Moment to Foster a Brighter Future

Kinshasa, July 11, 2026 – In celebration of World Population Day (WPD), the Democratic Republic of Congo is taking bold action. With over 65% of its population under the age of 25, the country is placing this milestone event at the forefront of sustainable development with a theme centered on ‘Realizing Expectations and Aspirations Amongst Youth – Today and Tomorrow’.

UNFPA and Government Call for Urgent Action

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Planning are sounding the alarm: the future of the nation depends on our ability to transform the potential of this youth into a driving force for growth. In a world where demographic shifts are taking place, the DRC is choosing its young population as a strategic major asset.

The ‘Lives, Choices and Futures’ Survey

The new UNFPA report, based on an inquiry of 100,000 youths across 73 countries, shatters stereotypes. The Congolese youth, like their peers globally, aspire to start a family but are hindered by structural obstacles: economic uncertainty, employment insecurity, and housing difficulties.

For 88% of them, financial security is the indispensable prerequisite for parenthood. It’s not a rejection of family, but a call for more opportunities and stability.
