New military cooperation center in tan-tan to boost defense innovation
Morocco and the United States are advancing a groundbreaking defense initiative with the establishment of the Advanced Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan. The facility will serve as a strategic hub designed to accelerate military modernization by integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering seamless interoperability between African and Western defense partners.
Speaking on the project’s potential, General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), highlighted Morocco’s strong foundation for rapid implementation. “Our existing infrastructure and skilled workforce position us perfectly to turn this vision into operational reality swiftly,” he stated, emphasizing the Kingdom’s credibility as a reliable industrial partner for the U.S.
Three core components will define AMTEC’s mission:
- Multidomain Training Area (MDTA): A high-tech training ground where forces can hone their skills in complex operational environments, including full-spectrum electromagnetic warfare.
- Drone Academy (MTDA): A specialized training hub for African operators in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a focus on counterterrorism operations across West Africa.
- Innovation and Experimentation Center: A dynamic lab for testing emerging solutions in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications, prioritizing cost-effective, scalable technologies tailored to African terrain.
The project extends beyond military applications, offering significant economic and technological spillover effects. It will engage defense industry leaders and academic institutions to cultivate an innovation ecosystem around next-generation technologies. AMTEC could also serve as a proving ground for wireless and detection systems while supporting development in remote regions.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, framed the initiative as “a transformative opportunity for American and African defense industries and academic institutions to collaborate on solutions addressing emerging security challenges.”
One of the first major milestones will be African Lion 2027, an annual exercise hosted in Morocco. Already a proving ground for advanced technology integration, the event will test AMTEC’s core functionalities in real-world conditions.
