A devastating fire broke out at the Château market, the main trading hub in Kpalimé, located in the Kloto 1 commune. The incident occurred during the night from Sunday, 6 September, to Monday, 7 September 2026, causing substantial material losses but no loss of life.

How the fire unfolded

The flames ignited shortly after midnight in the market’s relocation zone. Because of the widespread use of wooden structures and flammable materials, the fire spread quickly to nearby stalls and sheds.

Firefighters arrived promptly after the alarm was raised, supported by local police and the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC). Their efforts managed to contain the blaze during the night, preventing it from engulfing the entire commercial complex.
