Ousmane Sonko challenges president Faye’s governance from Touba
From Touba, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Ousmane Sonko, the President of the National Assembly, delivered a strong condemnation of the President of the Republic. During the inauguration of his party’s local headquarters, Sonko openly criticized Bassirou Diomaye Faye‘s approach to governance, describing the state’s management as “unsteady.” He went further, issuing a direct threat to obstruct any upcoming legislation proposed by the executive by consistently referring them to the Constitutional Council.
Addressing his fervent supporters, Ousmane Sonko invoked the revered principles of integrity inherent in Mouridism as he painted a bleak assessment of the current executive branch. The former Prime Minister echoed widespread speculation about internal discord that has circulated in recent months, lambasting a president whom he characterized as both isolated and susceptible to external influences. Sonko explicitly alleged that the head of state was being held captive by specific factions, some even from within the opposition, who are reportedly encouraging him to distance himself from his erstwhile mentor.
