Ousmane sonko hails constitutional reform as a leap for senegalese democracy
Dakar – The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, has lauded the constitutional reform recently adopted by parliamentary majority deputies, describing it as one of the most significant steps toward perfecting Senegalese democracy and enhancing transparency in public administration.
“This constitutional reform stands as one of the most consolidating measures, enabling us to make monumental strides in refining Senegalese democracy and fostering transparency in public sector management,” he affirmed.
Mr. Sonko presided over the plenary session dedicated to reviewing Bill No. 17/2026, which proposes a revision of the Constitution. This pivotal initiative originated from the deputies of the Pastef-Les patriotes parliamentary group.
The head of the legislative body confirmed that the approved text would now be forwarded to the Head of State for the necessary next steps.
“I will not invoke Article 103. I will request the President of the Republic to simply and purely promulgate this law, as the Constitutional Council, whose decisions are binding on all public, administrative, and political authorities, has effectively overseen both its adoption and approval,” he explained.
According to Mr. Sonko, the successful vote on this bill marks the culmination of the adoption procedure for this crucial legislative document.
Ousmane Sonko also provided a historical overview of the revision process, which commenced several years ago.
“The amendments now integrated into the Constitution have traversed the entire political journey of our commitments,” he added.
“Dialogue is essential, though not institutional. This dialogue has indeed taken place,” Mr. Sonko remarked.
He recalled that the President of the Republic had expressed a desire to convene a political dialogue, which Pastef-Les patriotes attended alongside numerous other political formations and organizations of various affiliations.
Mr. Sonko extended his congratulations to the deputies who championed this constitutional revision proposal, affirming its alignment with the outcomes of the aforementioned dialogue.
Regarding the declaration of assets, the former Prime Minister assured that he would complete this exercise very soon, having recently concluded his tenure as head of government.
“I declared my assets as Prime Minister. I have a three-month window to make another declaration upon leaving office. I intend to make that declaration next week,” Ousmane Sonko announced.
