Ousmane Sonko sets deadline for President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on constitutional reform

Dakar — Following the Conference of Presidents held this Friday, June 19, the National Assembly of Sénégal has established a demanding new legislative agenda. Law proposals concerning the Labour Code and the Social Security Code are set for commission review this Saturday, June 20, before moving to a plenary session scheduled for Monday, June 22.

The most critical file remains the proposed revision of the Constitution. The President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the Bureau members regarding this text, noting that he has yet to receive any feedback from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye concerning the mandatory advisory opinion previously submitted to the Executive.

A firm deadline for the Executive

In response to this silence from the Presidency, the head of the legislature has established a cutoff date of Monday, June 22. Regardless of whether a response is received by then, the Assembly’s Bureau will be summoned immediately to move forward with the legislative process. Ousmane Sonko expressed his firm intention to have this constitutional reform debated and voted upon before the current ordinary session concludes.

Furthermore, the Assembly President highlighted that the Parliament is still waiting for the formal submission of two significant financial documents. Despite being approved during the Council of Ministers, the Amending Finance Law (LFR) and the Budget Orientation Debate (DOB) document have not yet reached the legislative branch. The tension between the legislative and executive powers is now reaching a critical point as the clock ticks down.

The situation continues to evolve as the legislative session nears its end.
