Rabat archbishop steps back amid sexual violence allegations in Morocco
Morocco: Rabat archbishop faces multiple sexual violence accusations
At least five women have come forward with accusations of sexual violence against Cristobal Lopez Romero, the 74-year-old Archbishop of Rabat, Morocco. These serious allegations have prompted an immediate investigation by the Vatican, leading the influential cardinal to temporarily withdraw from his public duties on Tuesday. The Spanish cleric vehemently denies all claims.
My investigation included speaking with a retired church member who chose not to reveal the specifics of her testimony at this stage but confirmed experiencing repeated sexual assaults. I also reviewed a detailed written account from another woman, which was formally submitted to the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican’s diplomatic mission in the Moroccan capital.
In her testimony, this woman describes “physical gestures” by the cardinal that she found “unsettling,” including “particularly intense and prolonged embraces.” She further detailed “an attempt at physical intimacy that could be construed as an attempt” to kiss her, which she stated she “narrowly managed to avoid.” Additionally, a source within the diocese confirmed receiving information that at least three other women had reported similar experiences, with some of these deeply personal revelations made during the sacrament of confession.
When reached for comment regarding these accusations, Archbishop Lopez Romero stated that he had already “responded to [his] ecclesiastical superiors.” He affirmed his commitment to “fully cooperate with them in the ongoing investigation,” while maintaining his innocence, declaring he has “committed neither assault, violence, nor sexual harassment.” In a separate communique issued to the faithful of his diocese, he announced his decision to “step back during this investigation period, refraining from presiding over any public celebrations or participating in any pastoral activities, so as not to impede the process.”
An influential cardinal under scrutiny
The Holy See has not yet responded to inquiries. Cardinals, handpicked by the Pope, constitute the most senior echelon of the Church hierarchy, tasked with assisting the Pontiff in governance. Those under 80 years of age also hold the crucial responsibility of participating in the conclave to elect a new successor to Saint Peter.
During the conclave held in May 2025, Cardinal Lopez Romero was recognized as one of the most prominent and influential cardinals. Several media outlets had even identified him as a “papabile,” a term used for cardinals considered to be leading candidates for election as Pope.
