Senegal: al aminou lo confronts ousmane sonko amidst rising political friction

Le Premier ministre Al Aminou Lo s’en prend frontalement à Ousmane Sonko

The recent press conference held by Ousmane Sonko in Touba has reignited political tensions between him and Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo. Lo swiftly responded on social media, condemning what he views as the political instrumentalization of patriotism, just as Sonko declared his intention to introduce motions of censure against the current government.

The political friction between Prime Minister Al Aminou Lo and his predecessor, Ousmane Sonko, appears to be escalating. Hours after the leader of Pastef delivered a fiery press conference in Touba, where he sharply criticized government actions and announced plans to back a series of censure motions in the National Assembly, the head of government chose to respond via a message posted on the social media platform X.

Without directly naming Ousmane Sonko, Al Aminou Lo published a message widely interpreted as a direct retort to the former Prime Minister’s statements. “To attempt to monopolize patriotism for one faction alone is, precisely, to betray it,” Lo declared. This reaction follows Sonko’s remarks made at the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Touba. Addressing his party’s supporters, the former head of government asserted that he had received information regarding statements allegedly made by Al Aminou Lo during a confidential meeting.

“According to intelligence I’ve been given, Al Aminou Lo reportedly stated, during a private meeting, that his priority is now improving the business climate. This indicates a desire to meet the expectations of Western investors and economic partners,” Ousmane Sonko claimed. The president of Pastef characterized this strategic direction as a form of “sabotage” of the political agenda he champions. He then announced the imminent filing of a series of censure motions targeting the government led by Al Aminou Lo, aiming, he stated, to impede its operations.
