Tchad to host african water forum in july 2026

The Tchad is set to host the African Water Forum: From Vision to Action on 15 and 16 July 2026 in N’Djamena, as announced by Tahir Hamid Nguilin, the Minister of State and Finance, alongside Farouk Mollah Banna, Resident Representative of the World Bank in Tchad.

During a press briefing, Minister Nguilin highlighted Tchad’s pivotal role in continental water security, emphasizing the nation’s vast hydrological resources. « Tchad is a water-rich country, » he stated, citing landmarks such as the Lake Tchad, major rivers like the Chari and Logone, as well as the Lake Fitri, Léré, and Iro. He also underscored Tchad’s shared responsibility in transboundary basins, including the Nubian Basin, which sustains multiple countries in the region.

Despite these assets, Tchad faces pressing water challenges exacerbated by climate variability, rapid population growth, and aging water infrastructure. Nguilin stressed that these obstacles underscore the urgency of Tchad’s active participation in pan-African dialogues on water security. « Hosting this forum reaffirms our commitment to prioritizing water safety as a national and continental imperative, » he noted.

Farouk Mollah Banna, the World Bank’s representative in Tchad, unveiled a major financial initiative to bolster the country’s water sector. « A $160 million project is currently under preparation, » he confirmed, « slated for World Bank board review just two weeks prior to the forum. » This investment aims to enhance water governance and infrastructure resilience in Tchad.

The two-day forum will convene policymakers, technical partners, financiers, and water experts from across Africa. Participants will explore actionable strategies to strengthen water governance and address the continent’s evolving hydrological challenges.
