In Senegal, critical voices often hesitate to openly challenge Ousmane Sonko, largely due to the fervent and sometimes radical nature of his supporters on social media platforms.

The political dynamic between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko, who recently assumed the role of President of the National Assembly, has cast a shadow over the democratic discourse in Senegal. Civil society leaders and journalists have voiced concerns about an emerging climate of intimidation. Individuals who express criticism or opposition towards Ousmane Sonko frequently become targets of aggressive online smear campaigns orchestrated by dedicated members of Pastef, the ruling party.  

This environment fosters a degree of self-censorship, as individuals fear potential digital or even physical repercussions for expressing dissenting views.

Furthermore, shortly after assuming the role of Prime Minister in early April 2024, Ousmane Sonko delivered stern warnings to media outlets, stating:

“We will no longer permit media to publish whatever they wish about individuals, under the guise of so-called press freedom, without any credible sources.”


Concerns over judicial independence

Ousmane Sonko has also consistently raised questions regarding the integrity of Senegal’s judicial system.

For instance, in November 2025, during a public gathering, Sonko, then serving as Prime Minister, openly criticized certain magistrates. He accused them of obstructing financial investigations and perpetuating the very
