A notable development occurred on Friday, May 22, when President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the dismissal of his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, a former close ally in their shared political journey. Just four days later, on May 26, Sonko was elected to the prominent role of Speaker of the National Assembly, marking a swift shift in his political trajectory. Concurrently, the West African nation enacted a new law in March 2026 that substantially strengthens the penalties for homosexuality, reflecting ongoing societal debates within Senegal.
