Togo’s president visits koundjoaré operation front lines to boost security

On a strategic mission to reinforce national security efforts, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of the Council and Supreme Head of the Armed Forces, conducted an on-site inspection of the Koundjoaré operation in northern Togo on May 7, 2026.

His visit to the Savanes region, where terrorist threats persist, underscored the government’s commitment to monitoring and enhancing security measures. Upon landing by helicopter, he was greeted by the Koundjoaré operation commander, who briefed him at the Operational Command Post (PCO) on current security conditions, ongoing missions, and the challenges faced by deployed troops.

Following the assessment, the Supreme Head of the Armed Forces issued new directives aimed at sharpening the operational effectiveness of the units engaged in the mission.

on-site inspection and troop morale boost

The visit continued at the forward operational base in Tchamonga, located along the eastern border. There, after reviewing a tactical sandtable briefing, President Gnassingbé addressed the soldiers directly. He commended their bravery, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.

He also praised the achievements of the forces amid persistent regional security threats, highlighting the strong cooperation between Togolese troops and neighboring countries in combating terrorism.

government support and long-term security strategy

Reaffirming the military high command’s unwavering backing for Operation Koundjoaré, the President assured soldiers that their expressed needs would be progressively addressed to further enhance operational readiness.

He urged the troops to maintain high levels of vigilance, discipline, and resolve in the face of destabilization attempts across the subregion.

During his welcome address, Colonel Kombaté Latiémbé, the Koundjoaré operation commander, expressed gratitude for the resources provided by the government to ensure effective defense and security operations. He reaffirmed the troops’ commitment to securing both the population and the national territory.

beyond military action: a holistic approach to security

This visit reflects the comprehensive strategy adopted by Togolese authorities to address security challenges. Alongside defense and security forces, multiple government agencies—including the Interministerial Committee for Preventing and Combating Violent Extremism (CIPLEV) and the Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS)—are working to bolster community resilience in affected areas.

This integrated approach is further supported by diplomatic and mediation initiatives spearheaded by the President to promote peace, dialogue, and stability throughout West Africa.
