Faure Gnassingbé commits to restoring stability in eastern DRC

The African Union’s appointed mediator for the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Faure Gnassingbé, recently concluded a high-level review of six months of mediation efforts in Lomé. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including African Union facilitators, international partners, and regional organizations, to assess progress in the ongoing peace process.

Structural reforms strengthen African mediation efforts

During the session, Gnassingbé highlighted significant strides made in organizing and streamlining the mediation framework since January. « We have achieved a major milestone by bringing greater clarity and structure to Africa’s mediation architecture, » he stated. « This gathering represents a pivotal moment in enhancing our collective impact and advancing sustainable solutions for lasting peace. »

Urgent need for coordinated action remains

Despite these advancements, the Togolese leader emphasized the critical importance of further strengthening coordination among the various mediation mechanisms active in the region. « Our mission demands continued humility, perseverance, and unity, » he noted. « While challenges persist, we are heartened by the widespread willingness to support our efforts toward stability. »

Operational roadmap finalized for next phase

To sustain momentum, participants approved key measures, including revised work plans for the facilitator panel for the second half of 2026 and a 15-day deadline to develop a detailed action plan outlining implementation strategies for agreed-upon decisions. Delegates pledged to execute these measures with « rigor and consistency. »

Gnassingbé reaffirmed his commitment to the mission entrusted by the African Union, calling for sustained collective mobilization to restore peace in the DRC’s eastern provinces. « Together, we will press forward with determination, » he concluded.
