Us embassy in Mali issues travel alert for Bamako amid heightened security

The United States Embassy in Mali has issued a comprehensive security alert for its citizens residing in the capital, Bamako. The advisory urges heightened caution and warns of potential travel disruptions, citing a significant increase in security measures on routes leading to Modibo Keita International Airport and across various city districts.

Embassy directives indicate that Malian authorities have intensified their security presence throughout the capital. This includes the establishment of additional checkpoints, the deployment of roadblocks, and the possibility of temporary road closures, all of which are expected to cause considerable traffic delays and impact movement.

Furthermore, the embassy highlighted that these intensified security efforts might coincide with a surge in security concerns during upcoming religious observances, specifically Eid al-Adha (Tabaski), anticipated around May 27. Citizens are strongly advised to restrict non-essential travel until the end of the month.

The guidelines specifically instruct American citizens to steer clear of areas prone to large gatherings or demonstrations. They are also cautioned against attempting to bypass security barriers, encouraged to maintain a keen awareness of their surroundings, and to exercise extreme vigilance during all domestic travel within the country.

In a final set of recommendations, the embassy suggested that individuals review their personal security protocols, ensure effective communication channels are maintained, keep all travel documents current and readily accessible, and develop robust emergency plans, including identifying safe havens should the need arise.
