Chad’s 40 mw tri-fuel power plant project with sonelgaz gets underway
N’Djamena to benefit from a 40 MW flexible energy solution
The energy landscape in Chad is undergoing a significant transformation with the advancement of a landmark 40 MW tri-fuel power plant project in N’Djamena. This strategic initiative is being spearheaded by Algeria’s Sonelgaz, a leading energy conglomerate, in close collaboration with Tchad-Elec. A high-level delegation, led by Sonelgaz International CEO Yazid Djellouli, recently concluded a working visit to Chad to finalize technical specifications and operational timelines.
Why a tri-fuel power plant matters for Chad
Unlike conventional power stations, this new facility is designed to operate using multiple fuel sources—natural gas, liquid fuels, or a blend—providing unmatched operational flexibility. For N’Djamena, which faces persistent power outages and rising electricity demand, this adaptability ensures a more resilient energy supply. The plant can seamlessly switch between fuel types based on availability and cost, safeguarding against supply disruptions and price volatility.
Beyond electricity: skill development and long-term energy sovereignty
This partnership extends beyond mere infrastructure development. Sonelgaz, with its vast experience in managing large-scale energy networks across North Africa, is committed to transferring technical know-how to Chad’s Société Nationale d’Électricité (SNE). The goal is to empower local engineers and technicians with advanced maintenance and operational skills, fostering self-reliance and ensuring the plant’s long-term viability.
The project aligns with Chad’s broader energy strategy, which emphasizes diversification and sustainability. By reducing dependence on expensive fossil fuels and adopting flexible energy solutions, the country is taking decisive steps toward economic resilience and industrial growth. A stable and reliable power supply is not just a technical achievement—it’s a catalyst for business development, job creation, and overall economic progress in Chad.
