Wednesday evening’s Ligue 1 championship triumph for Paris Saint-Germain at Lens was undeniably overshadowed by a fierce battle of wits displayed on banners between the two passionate fan bases. In a twist of fate, it was at the revered Bollaert-Delelis stadium that Paris officially secured its 14th French title, much to the chagrin of the home side, Racing Club de Lens, who had remained strong contenders for the championship for much of the season.
The approximately 1,000 Parisian supporters situated in the visitors’ section initiated the verbal sparring with a highly provocative banner. It boldly declared: « Lens champion, stop believing… go back to drinking !!!! ». This cutting jab proved hard to stomach for the fervent “Sang et Or” (Blood and Gold) faithful, who swiftly retaliated. Their response directly targeted the Collectif Ultras Paris (CUP) with a banner that read: « Frustrated about not having alcohol in Qatar ? Bastard CUP ».
Throughout the course of the match, the Lens supporters had already voiced their broader displeasure, unfurling additional banners aimed at the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) and Paris Saint-Germain’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi.
