Following the recent French National Day, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu embarked on a significant two-day official visit to Morocco, marking a pivotal moment in redefining bilateral relations. This important journey comes after King Mohammed VI conveyed a message to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that both nations have initiated a historic phase to elevate their unique partnership into a benchmark for the future. This strategic alignment is specifically geared towards preparing for an upcoming royal visit to France, where a comprehensive treaty solidifying this strengthened alliance is expected to be signed.

This trip represents Sébastien Lecornu’s inaugural official visit to the Kingdom since assuming his duties in 2025. He arrived with a substantial delegation comprising approximately a dozen ministers, including Jean-Noël Barrot for Foreign Affairs and Laurent Nunez overseeing Interior matters. The French Head of Government is scheduled for a private discussion with his Moroccan counterpart, Aziz Akhannouch, before jointly presiding over a high-level meeting. This crucial encounter is anticipated to culminate in the signing of multiple bilateral agreements spanning vital sectors such as economic cooperation, immigration policies, justice reforms, and defense strategies.

Economically, discussions are heavily centered on fostering co-development initiatives across Africa. Capitalizing on Morocco’s established role as a key logistical and financial hub, businesses from both countries are poised to develop collaborative projects specifically targeting the vast African Continental Free Trade Area. The Kingdom’s robust commercial growth, evidenced by a 20.7% surge in intra-African exports in 2025, coupled with its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System, establishes a secure environment for investments. Furthermore, amid global geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s advanced port infrastructure stands out as a highly strategic alternative route for crucial logistical flows connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Beyond economic ventures and the concept of industrial co-production, regional security remains a paramount concern for both Paris and Rabat. The two capitals share significant anxieties regarding the persistent instability across the Sahel region, characterized by porous borders and a troubling rise in terrorist threats. By enhancing their coordinated efforts in security and migration management, France and Morocco are determined to infuse tangible substance into this exceptional partnership, which both diplomatic powers now aspire to elevate to unprecedented levels of cooperation and impact.
