French prime minister’s diplomatic visit to Morocco
Carrying a delegation of over ten ministers, including Foreign Affairs head Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is set to hold high-level talks with Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. This marks the first intergovernmental meeting between the two nations since 2019.
Following a stop in Qatar, the visit represents the start of Lecornu’s diplomatic engagements since assuming office at the Hôtel de Matignon. A packed agenda includes multiple rounds of negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of collaboration.
Relations between France and Morocco have seen a marked improvement since mid-2024, when the French President officially endorsed Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara—a move that strained diplomatic ties with Algeria.
On the security front, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will meet with his Moroccan counterpart, Abdelouafi Laftit. Key topics include judicial cooperation, with particular focus on the potential extradition of Ismaël Benahmed, a Franco-Moroccan national wanted in France for a 2019 homicide case in Paris.
