Gabon bids for 2027 African Union summit as president confirms candidacy
On Monday, June 15, 2026, before Parliament convened in Congress at Palais Léon Mba, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema formally announced a major ambition: Gabon’s candidacy to host the 2027 African Union (AU) Summit. This declaration marks a fresh chapter in Libreville’s strategy to reassert its position on the continental stage.
For the head of state, this bid reflects a clear political will to enhance Gabon’s international stature through an assertive diplomacy and a renewed commitment to multilateralism.
The president also used the platform to review the achievements of the past three years. He stated that efforts made have successfully amplified Gabon’s voice on critical global issues such as peace, security, sustainable development, and the green transition.
Social modernisation of the diplomatic corps
However, shining abroad requires solid foundations at home. Addressing the dire state of diplomatic and consular missions before August 30, 2023, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema acknowledged the extremely difficult conditions under which state agents abroad operated.
To revitalise these teams and boost the effectiveness of Gabon’s representation, the executive has implemented major structural reforms. The most notable is the financial upgrade of diplomats’ salaries. “We have increased the emoluments of our ambassadors and defence attachés to improve their living conditions and, above all, to enable them to achieve the assigned objectives,” the president said.
Asserted regional leadership
Far from being mere technical adjustments, these concrete measures aim to sustainably consolidate Gabon’s influence within regional and international organisations.
By applying for the 2027 pan-African gathering, the authorities of the Fifth Republic clearly lay out their roadmap: transforming Gabon into an essential hub for decision-making in Central Africa and across the continent. The cards are now on the table.
