Gabonese Head of State Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema touched down in Banjul, Gambia’s capital, yesterday for a packed four-day working and goodwill visit. He was warmly received by Gambia’s President Adama Barrow, with whom he held a private meeting before engaging in bilateral discussions at the official residence. The two leaders reviewed existing cooperation frameworks and explored fresh avenues for collaboration, reaffirming their shared commitment to deepening ties between Gabon and Gambia. Another official engagement is scheduled for today.

Strengthening ties and exploring economic opportunities

This visit, aimed at reinforcing the Libreville-Banjul axis, offers President Oligui Nguema the chance to inspect key government facilities and cultural landmarks. The itinerary includes stops at the National Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory in Brusubi, the University of Gambia, the National Emergency Treatment Centre in Farato, and the sacred Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau. These visits highlight the depth of bilateral exchanges beyond diplomacy.

The Gambian economy, heavily reliant on tourism, agriculture, and re-export trade, continues to show resilience. Recent data indicates a robust real GDP growth of 6.1%, driven largely by a thriving service sector.

A highlight of the visit will be a state banquet hosted by President Barrow in honor of his Gabonese counterpart, symbolizing the growing partnership between the two nations.
