Gabon’s clr party launches mobilisation drive one year before congress

Over the weekend in Libreville, leaders of the Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) kicked off a renewed push to revive the party’s activities. With its next congress just a year away, the political organisation founded by Jean-Boniface Assélé aims to restructure, re-energise its supporters and reaffirm its backing for President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

As Gabon moves toward key political milestones under the Fifth Republic, the CLR is determined to reclaim its full role on the national stage. Party officials gathered at Cabaret des Artistes in Libreville’s 5th district for an expanded directorate meeting designed to lay the groundwork for a fresh organisational drive.

A revival focused on the 2027 congress

Addressing party members and executives present, CLR president Jean-Boniface Assélé directly responded to persistent questions about his party’s future. Dismissing predictions of decline or disappearance, the former minister was emphatic. “Many, as usual, said the CLR is dead,” he stated, arguing that the strong turnout at this meeting was the best proof to the contrary.

Central to the discussions was preparation for the party’s next congress, scheduled in a year. For CLR leadership, this deadline must serve to redefine the party’s strategic direction and strengthen its presence across the entire country. In this light, Jean-Boniface Assélé urged members to conduct an unflinching review of the party’s operations and the challenges ahead. “This meeting will allow us, without complacency, to examine the rest of the road ahead and especially under what conditions,” he emphasised.

To support this process, a reflection committee tasked with proposing modalities for the party’s revival has been set up. The CLR president also announced the upcoming appointment of new officials to revitalise internal structures.

CLR asserts its role during the transition

The gathering also featured the presentation of the 2024–2025 activity report. This document highlights the CLR’s involvement in key stages of the political transition, as well as in the referendum and presidential campaigns. Through this assessment, the party aims to underscore its participation in the institutional changes set in motion since 30 August 2023 and its alignment with the direction taken by the president.

At a time when many parties are seeking to reposition themselves in Gabon’s evolving political landscape, the CLR signals its ambition to remain an influential voice in public debate. The challenge now is to turn this renewal drive into genuine grassroots momentum capable of making an impact in future elections and in consolidating the Fifth Republic.
