Gabon’s digital future launched with first national data center
In a significant stride towards national digital autonomy, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially inaugurated Gabon’s inaugural data center yesterday. Located within the Nkok Special Economic Zone, this cutting-edge facility was brought to fruition by ST Digital Data Center Services. The commissioning event was further underscored by the signing of a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization and Innovation and ST Digital, designed to foster the growth of Gabonese startups.
This dual initiative represents a robust commitment to enhancing local data hosting capabilities, strengthening cybersecurity protocols, and accelerating the nation’s overall digital transformation. Adhering to stringent international benchmarks and proudly certified as Tier III, this infrastructure is poised to dramatically boost Gabon’s national storage capacities. It will crucially support the expansion of cloud computing services, provide essential backing to government administrations and private enterprises, and fundamentally cement the country’s digital sovereignty. Through this landmark project, the Head of State clearly signals his unwavering determination to guide Gabon toward a future defined by assured digital independence.
The strategic partnership extends a privileged pathway for emerging businesses to access professional-grade services. Selected startups are set to benefit from a dedicated virtual machine, featuring 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of RAM, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous preferential rates.
The Ministry will play a crucial role in identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting, and spearheading awareness campaigns focused on cybersecurity. Laïka Mba, the Director General of ST Digital, powerfully articulated the project’s profound significance, stating that “possessing a national data center in Gabon transcends a mere technological triumph; it embodies an act of sovereignty.” She further emphasized that this facility provides “the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, public services, and the sensitive data of our citizens will no longer be reliant on foreign infrastructures.”
ST Digital is committed to ensuring the highest standards of data security and providing ongoing technical assistance. This collaborative public-private endeavor is expected to catalyze the development of innovative digital solutions, meticulously designed and securely hosted within Gabon, thereby cultivating an environment exceptionally conducive to innovation, job creation, and strategic investments across the nation.
