Julian Alvarez’s barcelona dream: psg also in the race
Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona are reportedly reigniting their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, aiming to secure the striker’s services before the summer transfer window closes. Barcelona, however, appears to hold a significant advantage, as the 26-year-old Atlético Madrid forward is actively pushing, both publicly and behind the scenes, for a move to the Catalan giants. Despite this strong desire, football icon Luis Suarez has suggested that Alvarez’s highly anticipated transfer might not materialize until next year.

“A player as intelligent as Julian, with the journey he has taken from River Plate to Manchester City, then Atlético, and also with the national team, would arrive and adapt seamlessly because he understands his role.” This statement from Luis Suarez to Mundo Deportivo follows similar sentiments from Pedri, who previously rolled out the red carpet for Julian Alvarez regarding his potential switch to FC Barcelona in an interview with RTVE. The Argentine international reportedly leveraged his involvement in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the Albiceleste to openly communicate his desire to depart Atlético Madrid, aiming to fulfill his “dream” of joining FC Barcelona.
“It will be difficult to leave”
“He is a player who works incredibly hard. At Barcelona, he would have wingers creating numerous opportunities for him. He possesses excellent passing ability and smart movement. He would integrate into Barça immediately.” The former FC Barcelona striker, who enjoyed a stellar career with the Blaugrana between 2014 and 2020, elaborated. However, Suarez also acknowledged the counterpoint, stating, “But there’s the other aspect. He plays for a big club like Atlético. It’s going to be difficult to leave. These upcoming weeks will be thrilling.” While Barcelona clearly has the player’s preference, securing the approval of Atlético Madrid remains a major hurdle. The Rojiblancos are determined to resist any offers throughout the summer, intending to keep Alvarez until the close of the transfer window on September 1, 2026.
“Stay. Next year, you’ll go wherever you want: to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern”
Paris Saint-Germain, who have maintained an interest in Julian Alvarez for the past two years, might find themselves missing out this summer. However, this could merely be a temporary setback. Drawing upon his own career experience, Luis Suarez recounted how he was persuaded to remain at Liverpool in 2013 before eventually leaving the club for FC Barcelona a year later.
“These are situations you sometimes provoke,” Suarez explained. “I experienced it myself at Liverpool. In 2013, I pushed for a move because I wanted to join Arsenal. I had a dispute with the club because we hadn’t qualified for the Champions League, and I felt I needed to take a new step. I remember the captain, Gerrard, took me aside and told me: ‘Stay. Next year, you’ll go wherever you want: to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern… But this year, please, stay. You can’t leave for Arsenal.’ And he convinced me.” Suarez drew a parallel to Alvarez’s current predicament: “In this specific case, the same could happen to Julián: that Cholo Simeone takes him aside and tells him, ‘This year, I want you to stay with us.’ For me, it was a Liverpool legend, the captain, who convinced me. I listened to reason, then I went out to apologize, and it ended up being my best season at the club. Fans, even if you’ve done everything to force a departure, if you then step onto the field and they see you giving your all, working hard, and defending the club, they eventually applaud you.”
