Lfp rejects olympique lyonnais’ request to delay opening ligue 1 fixture
Olympique Lyonnais’ initial request for a fixture change was contingent on a specific condition: their advancement to the UEFA Champions League playoff round. To reach the prestigious group stage of Europe’s premier club competition, Lyon must first navigate the third qualifying round, with matches scheduled for August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 or 12 (return leg). Should they succeed, the subsequent playoff stage – the final hurdle before the Champions League proper – would see them play their first leg on August 18 or 19, followed by the decisive return leg on August 25 or 26.
The core issue arises because the inaugural Ligue 1 fixture for Lyon is slated for August 22, falling directly between the crucial two legs of the Champions League playoff. It was precisely to circumvent this demanding schedule that OL sought a postponement of their away match against Toulouse, arguing that a less congested calendar would significantly enhance their prospects of securing a coveted spot in the Champions League.
Club officials from Lyon had also emphasized that Olympique Lyonnais’ presence in the Champions League would yield substantial benefits for French football as a whole.
However, during its meeting this Monday, the LFP firmly declined this proposition. The governing body notably concluded that commencing the Ligue 1 season with a postponed match was undesirable, especially as the entire championship is set to be broadcast on its new dedicated platform.
Barring any unforeseen calendar adjustments, if Olympique Lyonnais successfully reaches the Champions League playoffs, they will face a demanding week: an initial European tie, followed by their Ligue 1 trip to Toulouse, and then the return leg of their European playoff, all within a seven-day span.
