Ousmane Diagne leads Senegal’s Constitutional Council after political comeback

The highest judicial body in Senegal has a new leader. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed Ousmane Diagne as President of the Constitutional Council, replacing the late Mamadou Badio Camara. This appointment, formalized by Decree No. 2026-1318 on July 13, 2026, marks Diagne’s institutional return after being excluded from the initial government led by Ousmane Sonko.

From prosecution to constitutional leadership

Ousmane Diagne brings extensive experience to his new role. Previously, he served as the Attorney General near the Dakar Court of Appeal and as the First Attorney General near the Supreme Court. His political career includes serving as Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals in the first government of Ousmane Sonko, at the start of Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s presidency. However, he was later excluded from the executive during subsequent reshuffles.

A strategic appointment for Senegal’s judiciary

Diagne’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Senegal’s highest court. The Constitutional Council plays a pivotal role in arbitrating institutional and electoral disputes, as evidenced during recent constitutional reform tensions. His return to a leading judicial position highlights the government’s confidence in his expertise and impartiality.

The Council, now under Diagne’s leadership, is expected to navigate complex legal challenges with renewed vigor. His deep understanding of both legal and political systems positions him well to guide the institution through future controversies.
