Senegal: Ousmane Sonko elected President of the National Assembly
Ousmane Sonko was elected on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as President of Senegal’s National Assembly, just four days after being dismissed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Leader of the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF) party, which holds power, Sonko secured 132 votes out of the 133 cast. He replaces El Malick Ndiaye, who resigned last Sunday.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye appointed Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô as Prime Minister on Monday evening. Lô previously served as Minister in charge of Monitoring, Guidance, and Evaluation of Senegal’s 2050 National Transformation Program and as Secretary-General of the Government.
