Senegal’s economic vision: thousands of jobs announced by prime minister Ousmane Sonko

Senegal’s Economic Revival: Ousmane Sonko Pledges Thousands of Jobs for Youth

In a bold declaration before the National Assembly, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has placed employment at the heart of the government’s economic and social agenda. Addressing lawmakers during a session of urgent topical questions, the Prime Minister underscored the urgency of tackling youth unemployment in a climate of growing societal expectations.

Prioritizing Local Employment Through Economic Patriotism

Speaking with conviction, Sonko emphasized that job creation is the government’s absolute priority. “The employment policy is our top priority, and we will create thousands of jobs. I make this commitment as Prime Minister,” he declared. This pledge is part of a broader strategy to reorient Senegal’s economic priorities, with a strong focus on nurturing the national private sector and bolstering economic sovereignty.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the economic realities while reaffirming his commitment. “I cannot promise employment for everyone, but we will create thousands of jobs for young people,” he stated. This initiative will rely on a collaborative effort involving the state, private enterprises, and economic partners to drive sustainable employment opportunities.

Strengthening National Interests in Economic Policy

Ousmane Sonko also highlighted the need for an economic policy that prioritizes national interests. The goal is to ensure greater participation of Senegalese citizens in productive sectors without undermining cooperation with foreign investors. “We are prioritizing national interests, which does not mean we will exclude foreigners. We are organizing ourselves so that the share of Senegalese citizens in the economy is substantial,” he explained.

A key component of this strategy is the upcoming Patriotism Economic Bill, aimed at fostering the localization of industrial and commercial activities. This legislative move seeks to reinforce Senegal’s economic sovereignty and create a more inclusive economic environment.

Private Sector as a Catalyst for Growth

The Prime Minister stressed that the success of this policy hinges on a well-structured national private sector, recognized as a vital engine for growth and reducing unemployment. “A well-structured private sector must be supported by its government,” he concluded, urging collective mobilization to meet the long-term aspirations of Senegal’s youth.
