SOLIBRA’s ECO BOX project tackles plastic waste in Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire
SOLIBRA has officially inaugurated the ECO BOX project, a significant new initiative designed to strengthen the fight against plastic pollution and foster a sustainable circular economy within the commune of Treichville. This launch coincided with World Plastic Bag-Free Day, observed on July 3, 2026.
The decision to focus on Treichville was strategic, given the substantial daily quantities of plastic waste generated there. These discarded plastics frequently obstruct drainage systems and compromise vital sanitation infrastructure. In response, ECO BOX aims to revolutionize waste management by transforming these plastics into valuable resources through a well-structured collection and recycling program.
This ambitious project is built upon a robust partnership, bringing together SOLIBRA, the Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This collaborative synergy is poised to significantly enhance waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate new economic opportunities at the local level.
To facilitate the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment has been distributed to the operational teams. This includes six wheelbarrows, a dedicated collection tricycle, 80 refuse bags, twelve rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.
Through the ECO BOX initiative, the partners are committed to achieving several critical objectives. These include the progressive elimination of plastic waste from drainage channels to mitigate flood risks, the creation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.
A core component of the project is public engagement and awareness. Collection agents will play a crucial role in encouraging residents to adopt proper waste sorting habits and promoting a widespread culture of cleanliness throughout the commune.
The launch ceremony was a pivotal moment, marked by the symbolic cutting of the ribbon, officially signaling the start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the handover of keys for the first collection tricycle to one of the agents, who will now traverse the streets of Treichville, diligently collecting plastic waste.
