During a high-level interministerial council meeting on Thursday, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko delivered a scathing critique of the country’s judicial system, highlighting what he described as alarming delays in handling cases related to financial accountability.

Prime Minister’s frustration over stalled justice system

Addressing ministers and top officials, Ousmane Sonko expressed his growing dissatisfaction with the pace of legal proceedings, particularly in cases involving alleged mismanagement of public funds. His remarks came after Justice Minister Yassine Fall presented updates on ongoing investigations, prompting a direct and pointed response from the head of government.

The Prime Minister questioned the effectiveness of judicial institutions in addressing corruption, emphasizing that several sensitive cases had been pending without concrete legal outcomes. He argued that the lack of swift judicial action undermines public trust in government institutions and fuels perceptions of impunity among officials.

In his intervention, Sonko stressed that accountability must be enforced at all levels, regardless of whether the individuals involved are former or current officials. The Prime Minister, however, insisted on the need for greater transparency and accelerated proceedings.
