Abidjan clashes over urban project: district and Plateau clash over laguna bank development

Tensions between Abidjan’s district authority and the Plateau municipality have flared up following the destruction of recently completed infrastructure worth nearly 350 million francs CFA on the eastern lagoon bank. The Plateau’s local government has labeled the demolition an « unilateral act » and is preparing an administrative appeal to halt further destruction and seek compensation.

The municipality’s concerns extend beyond the already damaged area, with fears that remaining lagoon-side improvements may also be targeted. This escalation marks the latest in a series of disputes between the two governing bodies over urban development and jurisdictional boundaries.
