Air Sénégal has officially taken delivery of its latest aircraft, a Boeing 737-800 named “Gorée”. This strategic acquisition represents a crucial milestone in modernizing the national carrier’s fleet and asserting the country’s aviation sovereignty on the international stage.

The acquisition was made possible through direct financial support from the state of Sénégal, coordinated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transport under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Backed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this investment reflects a national determination to equip the country with a competitive airline capable of driving economic growth, international connectivity, and tourism.

Technical features of the aircraft

The newly received jet, a single-aisle model from the reliable Boeing 737 NG family, is designed to bring valuable versatility to short and medium-haul routes. The aircraft is configured in a comfortable two-class layout, offering a total of 174 seats: 12 in Business Class and 162 in Economy Class, all outfitted with modern Recaro seating. Physically, the aircraft spans 39.5 meters in length with a 35.8-meter wingspan, and features three galleys and three onboard restrooms to optimize passenger service.

A flying ambassador named Gorée

The naming of the aircraft carries significant historical weight. As a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, the island of Gorée stands as a universal symbol of memory, resilience, and intercultural dialogue. Air Sénégal envisions this aircraft as a flying ambassador, proudly carrying this historic name across Africa and beyond, linking the nation’s heritage with its global ambitions and diaspora.

In addition to its symbolic value, this new Boeing 737-800 is set to play a key role in boosting the Senegalese tourism industry by facilitating visitor arrivals and enhancing connections with regional markets. By expanding its active fleet, the airline aims to achieve several key strategic goals: increasing operational capacity, sustaining long-term growth, securing national air sovereignty, and delivering an elevated travel experience for all passengers.
