With Robert Lewandowski’s departure, FC Barcelona has swiftly moved to secure a replacement, with the Catalan club reportedly targeting Anthony Gordon.

The Newcastle United winger, known for his versatility across the front line, including central attacking roles, is anticipated to be officially unveiled by both clubs shortly.

A high-value 80 million euro transfer

FC Barcelona wasted no time after securing their league title, immediately identifying Robert Lewandowski’s successor.

Reports earlier this week indicated that Barcelona’s management reached an agreement with Newcastle for a substantial fee of 80 million euros, plus additional bonuses.

This information was further corroborated by transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.

Furthermore, Barcelona has reportedly already settled on personal terms for the 25-year-old English talent. The player has been a long-standing target, with both Blaugrana coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco championing his acquisition. Both have been admirers of Gordon since his early career, which saw him develop at Liverpool, gain prominence at Everton, and truly excel at St James’ Park.

Gordon arrived in Barcelona on Thursday with his agents and family, primarily to undergo his medical examination. As expected, he successfully completed all necessary checks without any issues.

From a performance perspective, the English international is fresh off an impressive season with Newcastle, having netted 17 goals and provided 5 assists across 46 appearances in all competitions. This tally includes a remarkable 10 goals in just 12 Champions League matches.

A distinct profile compared to Lewandowski

This past season, Lamine Yamal emerged as the Blaugrana’s top scorer. Following the prodigious talent, Ferran Torres also played a pivotal role in the successful campaign under Hansi Flick.

Despite being 37, Robert Lewandowski still managed a respectable 19 goals in 46 outings. Anthony Gordon, a versatile forward, is capable of playing centrally, though he typically thrives on the left wing, cutting in on his stronger foot.

For the left flank, the ideal player must offer pace, penetrative runs, and a high-intensity pressing game.

The situation surrounding Marcus Rashford remains intricate. Barcelona holds a purchase clause for him until June 15, valued at 30 million euros, significantly less than the fee for Gordon. However, Rashford’s substantial salary poses a financial hurdle for President Joan Laporta.

This does not, however, rule out the Manchester United winger potentially playing in Spain next season.

Two primary options are currently under consideration: a renegotiated loan agreement or a permanent transfer proposal with a reduced salary structure. Beyond these two English talents, Barcelona is also reportedly monitoring Julian Alvarez. These significant reinforcements aim to solidify their dominance in La Liga, following their second consecutive title win this season.
