Intra-African trade has officially been elevated to a core pillar of Gabon’s economic strategy. At the cabinet meeting held on June 25, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema directed his administration to promptly implement concrete measures designed to bolster commercial exchanges with fellow African nations, with a specific emphasis on food products.

This directive signals a significant shift in the economic agenda championed by the head of state. Since assuming leadership, President Oligui Nguema has consistently highlighted regional integration and South-South cooperation as pivotal aspects of his governance.

Presidential directive issued to ministries

The final communiqué from the Council of Ministers underscored the President’s insistence on favoring imports from African countries. This, he emphasized, is crucial for strengthening the continent’s economies. “By championing imports from African nations, especially for food products, we actively contribute to the economic integration of the continent and promote shared prosperity among sister states,” Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema affirmed.

Beyond this declaration of principle, the President demanded swift execution of this new orientation. The Council of Ministers specified that this constitutes “a firm directive” for which he expects “immediate and resolute translation into concrete and measurable actions.”
