Norwegian development minister strengthens ties in Senegal visit

The Norwegian Minister of International Development, His Excellency Åsmund Aukrust, conducted an official visit to Dakar from May 3 to 4, 2026.

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Dakar hosted a significant diplomatic event as His Excellency Åsmund Aukrust, Norway’s Minister of International Development, embarked on an official visit to Senegal. The two-day engagement from May 3 to 4, 2026, underscored a pivotal moment in deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.

During this visit, the Norwegian minister engaged in high-level discussions with key Senegalese officials, including the Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, the Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition, Elhadj Abdourahmane Diouf, the Minister of Economy, Planning and Cooperation, Abdourahmane Sarr, as well as the President of the National Assembly, El Malick Ndiaye.

These strategic meetings provided a platform to address pressing regional challenges, particularly the evolving situation in the Sahel and its implications for security and sustainable development. The talks also covered broader global issues and multilateral initiatives such as the upcoming UN80 summit. This visit served as a reaffirmation of both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.

Both delegations emphasized the importance of Senegal’s role as a stable democracy and a pivotal partner in fostering peace and regional cooperation in West Africa.
