Olympique Lyonnais seeks ligue 1 opener postponement for champions league focus
Olympique Lyonnais is strategically positioning itself for a strong bid in the Champions League, having formally submitted a request to defer its initial Ligue 1 fixture.
Reports indicate that Lyon’s leadership has communicated with the LFP, seeking to reschedule their away game against Toulouse, originally slated for August 22. This deferral is contingent upon their advancement to the Champions League play-off rounds, as the fixture would otherwise coincide with the critical two-leg European tie, an absolutely vital period for the club.
European ambition takes center stage
The squad commenced training as early as June 29, specifically to prepare for the Champions League third preliminary round, scheduled for August 4 or 5, followed by the second leg on August 11. Should they progress, manager Paulo Fonseca’s team would then face the play-off matches shortly thereafter.
Olympique Lyonnais has justified its appeal by invoking the “greater interest of French football,” a rationale previously employed by Paris Saint-Germain under similar circumstances last season. The LFP is expected to render a decision on this application in the coming days, a ruling that could significantly enhance OL’s preparation for a potential crucial two-legged European encounter.
