Paris Saint-Germain eyes €60m diogo costa transfer ahead of world cup

Despite Matvey Safonov’s strong performances for Paris Saint-Germain since stepping into the starting role, his long-term position as the first-choice goalkeeper isn’t yet secure for the upcoming season. PSG’s sporting advisor, Luis Campos, is reportedly making moves to finalize the transfer of FC Porto’s prominent shot-stopper, Diogo Costa.

Following their Ligue 1 championship triumph, secured after a decisive victory against RC Lens, Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting director, had publicly stated that transfer discussions were put on hold. His reasoning was clear: “For us regarding the transfer market, and this is a decision we made with our coach and the president, our transfer activity has been completely paused for several weeks.” The primary objective was to focus entirely on the impending Champions League final, scheduled for May 30 against Arsenal. However, this temporary halt in official talks doesn’t mean the Parisian club lacks specific and ambitious transfer plans for the summer window.

Paris Saint-Germain targets Diogo Costa?

Indeed, reports from Mercado Azul, a publication specializing in FC Porto news, indicate that Paris Saint-Germain is keenly interested in acquiring Diogo Costa, the celebrated goalkeeper for the recently crowned Portuguese champions. This pursuit suggests a potential shift in PSG’s goalkeeping strategy, possibly signaling a lack of long-term commitment to Matvey Safonov, despite his commendable displays since stepping into the starting role. It also implies that Lucas Chevalier, who joined for €40 million plus bonuses last summer, might not be given another opportunity. Diogo Costa signed a contract extension until 2030 last December, notably with a revised, lower release clause now set at €60 million.

Could the transfer be finalized before the World Cup?

Such a contractual adjustment is often interpreted as a precursor to an impending move. Furthermore, Mercado Azul reveals that Paris Saint-Germain has intensified negotiations, aiming to secure Diogo Costa’s transfer before the World Cup commences on June 11. The club’s objective appears to be a swift resolution to their crucial goalkeeper situation. It’s worth noting that Diogo Costa’s agent is Jorge Mendes, a figure with a well-established professional relationship with Luis Campos. This connection could significantly streamline discussions for the transfer of the goalkeeper, who is expected to be Portugal’s starting custodian this summer.
