Kafra Sud-Est 1 project launch

Algeria’s Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, acting on a directive from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, traveled to Niger on Thursday to oversee a pivotal moment in bilateral relations. Alongside his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, the Prime Minister officially inaugurated drilling operations for the Kafra Sud-Est 1 exploration well. This significant undertaking marks a fresh chapter in the strategic alliance between Algiers and Niamey, simultaneously bolstering Sonatrach’s operational footprint within Niger.

Upon his arrival at the Kafra oil field, situated in northern Niger approximately 85 kilometers from the Algerian frontier, Prime Minister Ghrieb received a warm welcome from his Nigerien counterpart, accompanied by key government officials and senior national figures. This visit underscores the mutual commitment of both nations’ leaders to infuse new vitality into Algero-Nigerien relations, elevating them beyond political dialogue to tangible economic and energy cooperation. The initiation of drilling at Kafra Sud-Est 1 perfectly aligns with this ambition, representing one of the initial on-the-ground manifestations of their desire to advance joint projects in critical sectors like energy and hydrocarbons.

Sifi Ghrieb emphasized that this operation constitutes “a new cornerstone” in the enduring strategic partnership uniting Algeria and Niger. He highlighted that the project commences merely weeks after the successful commissioning of the Niamey power plant. “We gather today, just over two months after the inauguration of the Niamey power plant, to collectively lay another foundation stone for our strategic partnership,” the Prime Minister affirmed during the official ceremony. This renewed momentum stems from the shared vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Nigerien Army General Abdourahamane Tiani to solidify ties between their countries, translating political will into concrete programs and initiatives. It also reflects the implementation of resolutions from the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Grand Joint Cooperation Commission, convened in Niamey on March 23 and 24, 2026.

High stakes in exploration operations

The drilling of the Kafra Sud-Est 1 well is part of extensive exploration efforts aimed at thoroughly assessing the Kafra field’s oil potential, a crucial step before considering any subsequent development and production phases. For Sonatrach, the stakes are substantial, encompassing energy security, industrial growth, and strategic positioning. The Algerian group intends to leverage its extensive expertise for this operation while firmly establishing its long-term presence in Niger. The project mobilizes several of Sonatrach’s specialized subsidiaries. The National Drilling Company (Enafor) is tasked with coordinating the human, technical, and logistical resources essential for the well’s completion. The National Well Services Company (ENSP) contributes its specialized domain knowledge, while the National Geophysics Company (ENG) provides its geophysical expertise. This comprehensive mobilization serves as a clear demonstration of Algerian proficiency in the hydrocarbon sector, uniting multiple Sonatrach competencies around a significant international project.

Brahim Hammoudi, CEO of Enafor, articulated this clear ambition, stressing his company’s determination to “establish its presence in Niger within a framework of sustainable cooperation.” Beyond the technical execution of the drilling, Kafra Sud-Est 1 is poised to serve as a showcase for Algerian drilling prowess, simultaneously enabling Enafor to augment its experience within international markets.

Niger, a growing partner in energy development

However, the cooperation between the two nations is not expected to be limited solely to exploration activities. A memorandum of understanding, signed on June 2 between Enafor and the Nigerien National Petroleum Company (Sonidep), outlines a study for the establishment of a joint venture specifically focused on drilling. This prospective initiative could pave the way for deeper industrial collaboration, particularly through the transfer of skills, human resource training, and the enhancement of local capacities. For Algeria, this signifies both an expansion of its companies’ operations in Niger and a contribution to the advancement of Niger’s burgeoning oil industry. For Niamey, this partnership presents a valuable opportunity to benefit from the seasoned experience and specialized knowledge of a major oil group with a long track record in hydrocarbon exploration and production.

Four exploration wells programmed

Furthermore, Kafra Sud-Est 1 marks the initial milestone in a broader exploration initiative. According to Rabah Bouchak, SIPEX director in Niger, Sonatrach plans to launch four exploration wells in northern Niger over the next two years. This ambitious schedule underscores the group’s increasing interest in the region’s energy potential and reaffirms its commitment to progressively solidify its foothold in Niger. Preliminary studies and work have revealed promising hydrocarbon prospects, lending particular importance to these upcoming exploration endeavors. The commencement of Kafra Sud-Est 1 is therefore a decisive step towards gaining a deeper understanding of the field’s potential and defining the outlook for its eventual development.

A new phase in Sonatrach’s African expansion
