Barcelona has imposed a firm 48-hour deadline to finalize the acquisition of Manchester City’s midfield maestro, Rodri. The Catalan giants are aggressively pursuing a definitive agreement, aiming to present the Spanish international at the upcoming Joan Gamper Trophy match.

Negotiations between these two European football powerhouses have reached a critical juncture as they strive to bridge the valuation gap. Manchester City is demanding a transfer package close to €80 million (£69 million) to sanction the midfielder’s departure.

Barcelona’s initial official bid of €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons was rejected by Manchester City. A subsequent revised proposal, reportedly up to €75 million, also failed to unlock the transfer, leading to intensified discussions over the weekend.

The primary sticking point in the ongoing discussions remains the precise economic structure of the transfer. City aims to maximize the guaranteed portion of the fee, while Barcelona endeavors to limit its upfront expenditure.

Both clubs are evaluating two main compromise formulas to achieve the desired valuation. One proposed structure involves €70 million in fixed payments with reduced bonuses, while another suggests €65 million fixed, complemented by €15 million in performance-related add-ons.

Crucially, Rodri has unequivocally expressed his strong desire to leave England and prioritizes a move to Barcelona. With alternative interest from Real Madrid now completely dismissed, the midfielder’s clear stance has provided the Blaugrana with immense confidence during these critical negotiations.

Rodri recently returned to England to resume pre-season preparations with Manchester City, having requested a brief delay to sort out his future. He intends to regain match fitness with City, even if his tenure in Manchester proves to be short-lived.

Barcelona’s management considers City’s valuation somewhat steep, particularly given that the midfielder has only one year remaining on his current contract. However, the Catalan board acknowledges that it must meet the English club’s financial demands to secure his signature immediately.

President Joan Laporta is now set to intervene directly in the final stages of the negotiations. Barcelona hopes that Laporta’s personal involvement will facilitate the finalization of an agreement over the weekend or, at the very latest, by Monday.

Should Barcelona successfully meet its self-imposed deadline, Rodri is expected to travel to Catalonia shortly after an agreement is concluded. The club anticipates his participation in his first training session on Tuesday, ahead of his anticipated appearance at the Joan Gamper Trophy presentation.
