While PSG earned a valuable point in Madrid and OL Lyonnes devoured Servette, Paris FC found themselves outclassed by the Barcelona juggernaut. The reigning champions, winners of four of the last six editions, made short work of the third French club on matchday one. The reaction to this result will linger, raising questions about the gap between the French challengers and Europe’s elite.

The shock opener and Barcelona’s swift response

Against all expectations, it was Paris FC who drew first blood through new signings Mariam Toloba and Evelyne Viens. The former Nantes player pounced on a poor Spanish touch to release the Canadian, who used her power to shrug off Paredes and Martina before finishing past Cata Coll. A stunned silence fell over the Spanish stadium, but Barcelona wasted little time in restoring order. Forty minutes later, the scoreline had already turned into a rout (4-1).

After being called into action several times, Chavas was finally beaten by Kerolin (18th minute). Completely unmarked at the far post from a corner, Serrajordi surged in to put Barcelona ahead, before Graham Hansen delivered another inch-perfect assist, this time for Pajor. The Norwegian, having provided two assists, then helped herself to Barcelona’s fourth goal just before the break. It was all too fast for the Parisians, who were technically overwhelmed.

Second-half parity offers little consolation

While they could not overturn the reigning champions, Paris FC matched them over the remaining 45 minutes. Their pressing was more intense and better coordinated, preventing Barcelona from playing freely after the restart. But if the Parisian defence had rediscovered its composure, the attack still lacked a cutting edge. And as chances went begging, the hosts punished them.

From a moment of brilliance by Sydney Schertenleib, Pajor completed her brace (70th minute). The Parisians, however, kept pushing and were eventually rewarded. Clara Mateo needed two attempts but pulled one back shortly after. The visitors won the second half 1-1, but the first had been fatal. The worst is over for Paris FC. Now they must face Arsenal next week…
