Bénin and Canada cement long-term diplomatic partnership

Cotonou and Ottawa have formalised a permanent political and diplomatic consultation framework to streamline bilateral relations and ensure consistent follow-up on shared commitments. The announcement was made by Bénin‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through an official statement on social media.

This initiative follows the accreditation of Canada’s newly appointed ambassador to Bénin, Evedabi, whose credentials were presented on 3 August 2026. The diplomatic gesture set the stage for intensive technical discussions involving key government officials from both nations.

Government officials finalise cooperation roadmap

The framework was signed by Bénin‘s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amori Brunet, and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand. According to the official communiqué, this agreement aims to « enhance the monitoring of bilateral commitments, prepare future joint initiatives, and deepen coordination on regional and global issues of mutual interest.»

This structured dialogue builds on decades of cooperation that began in 1962, when Bénin and Canada established official diplomatic ties. Over the years, collaboration has focused on economic development, public health, and education, with annual trade exchanges exceeding 40 million Canadian dollars.

Sectoral working groups drive implementation

In the wake of the ambassadorial handover, Bénin convened sector-specific working sessions chaired by high-ranking officials. These meetings brought together Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister of State for External Resource Mobilisation and Debt Management, and Shegun Bakari, Minister of Tourism, External Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion.

The new permanent mechanism underscores a renewed governance structure, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to advancing their shared diplomatic and economic priorities through sustained engagement.
