Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso’s government has announced a significant achievement: more than 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have successfully returned to their home localities by June 30, 2026. This encouraging progress is a direct result of the steadily improving security situation in various areas that national forces have retaken.

According to official figures, these returns now encompass 1,034 communities, marking a substantial increase from 871 localities recorded at the close of 2025. At that earlier point, the count of displaced individuals who had reoccupied their original residences stood at approximately 1.16 million.

These crucial statistics were unveiled during the semi-annual performance review of the Ministry responsible for Solidarity. Halfway through the 2026 fiscal year, the ministerial department reported an execution rate of 46.06% for its stated commitments.

The assessment also highlighted that over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received vital assistance during the first six months of the year. Beneficiaries were provided with essential aid, including food supplies, basic necessities, and comprehensive support designed to facilitate their long-term recovery.

Furthermore, authorities underscored the critical importance of accelerating efforts to rehabilitate housing in the affected localities. They emphasized that this measure is fundamental to ensuring the sustained voluntary return of populations and fostering their lasting resettlement under stable conditions.
