Over 4,300 confirmed cases reported
The crisis has now claimed 2,011 lives out of 4,381 confirmed infections, with a devastating mortality rate of 45.9%. Originating in Ituri Province in the northeast, the virus has since spread to neighboring regions including North Kivu, where long-standing conflict has severely weakened healthcare infrastructure. This outbreak now threatens to rival the devastating 2018-2020 epidemic, which previously held the grim record with nearly 2,300 fatalities.
Experimental vaccine trial underway for emerging strain
Health experts have confirmed this outbreak is driven by the rare Bundibugyo Ebola variant, for which no approved vaccine currently exists. The World Health Organization has authorized emergency clinical trials for Ervebo—the only Ebola vaccine currently licensed—following promising safety data. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has pledged to supply doses from the global Ervebo stockpile, which contains approximately 500,000 doses. The vaccine is manufactured by the American pharmaceutical giant Merck.
Global research efforts accelerate vaccine development
In addition to Ervebo, multiple vaccine candidates are entering advanced testing phases. Moderna has received Canadian approval to initiate human trials for its experimental vaccine, while Oxford University and Hilleman Laboratories are developing two additional candidates. In response to the escalating crisis, the United States has committed over $242 million in emergency funding to support Ebola containment efforts across affected provinces.
