The annual Grand Magal pilgrimage in Touba draws millions of faithful, but this year, travelers are grappling with soaring transportation costs. As the event approaches, passengers face steep price hikes for buses and taxis heading to Senegal’s spiritual heartland.

Surge in transport prices ahead of the pilgrimage

The bustling Baux Maraîchers station in Pikine, a key transit point, reflects the urgency. While standard fares typically range from 3,000 to 5,000 CFA francs, this year’s prices have jumped to between 8,000 and 10,000 francs. The disparity depends on comfort levels—unclimatized taxis at the higher end and slightly more affordable but still costly buses at the lower end. Fallou, a local broker at the station, confirms the sharp increase, attributing it to heavy traffic congestion on the Dakar-Touba route.

Passengers bear the burden of demand

Longtime pilgrim Mamadou has never missed the Grand Magal, and this year is no exception. Despite frustration over inflated prices, he feels compelled to pay. “They take advantage of every major event to push prices up,” he says. “Touba isn’t far, and normally, fares are reasonable. But times are hard—we can’t afford to overpay. Still, my family is waiting, and we must welcome our guests with dignity.”

Transport operators defend the price adjustments, citing operational challenges. Bour Guewel, a veteran driver with nearly three decades of experience, explains the dilemma: “Before departing, buses are full, but returning to Dakar is a struggle. Fuel prices have risen, and traffic jams near Touba make every trip longer and costlier.” To offset losses, drivers have no choice but to raise fares, a pattern that repeats during peak travel seasons.

Public transport struggles amid high demand

The state-run Dakar Dem Dikk service offers a fixed fare of 4,000 CFA francs, but supply falls short of demand. With limited luggage space and frequent overcrowding, pilgrims face additional hurdles in reaching Touba comfortably and affordably.
