Madagascar and Chad strengthen economic ties during high-level visit

Economic and infrastructure partnerships take center stage

The President of Madagascar’s Refoundation, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, attended Chad’s 66th Independence Day celebrations in N’Djamena on August 11, 2026. The event at the Place de la Nation featured a grand military parade. Invited by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Randrianirina joined him and Guinea-Bissau’s President General Horta N’Tam in wearing military uniforms during the ceremony.
This visit also paved the way for deeper bilateral exchanges. The day before, both leaders held talks to discuss ways to strengthen relations and explore new cooperation opportunities, particularly in economic development and infrastructure projects. Randrianirina emphasized the importance of African unity, stating, ‘African nations must unite and support each other to drive the continent’s progress.’

Reinvigorating historical bonds

The Malagasy leader highlighted the long-standing yet underutilized diplomatic ties between Madagascar and Chad. Both nations share a colonial legacy under French rule, transitioned to republic status in 1958, and gained independence in 1960. Despite this shared history, Randrianirina noted that cooperation has lagged in recent years.
Chad’s President has announced plans for an official visit to Madagascar, aiming to revitalize collaboration across multiple sectors. The upcoming meeting is expected to solidify a roadmap for future joint initiatives.
