Confronted by the aggressive activities of non-state armed groups, notably the Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS), military authorities in Niamey are compelled to diversify their external support. This strategic pivot aims to ensure the continued operational effectiveness of their troops on the ground.

It is within this framework of intense security challenges that Algeria has delivered a substantial consignment of military hardware to the Nigerien armed forces. This vital emergency provision encompasses four helicopters, specifically two Mi-24V combat aircraft and two Mi-171 tactical transport helicopters. The package also includes essential munitions, spare parts, and comprehensive logistical and maintenance support equipment.

The imperative of ground operations

From a tactical standpoint, Niger’s armed forces are engaged in a complex war of attrition. Recent clashes and ambushes, attributed to JNIM in the country’s western reaches and EIGS along its border zones, highlight an urgent requirement for enhanced air mobility and close-range firepower.
