Niger army suffers losses in Boko Haram assault near N’Guigmi

A fresh jihadist attack by Boko Haram has left a dozen soldiers dead near the southeastern town of N’Guigmi in Niger, local sources report. The assault occurred on Friday morning, marking another violent episode in a region long plagued by extremist violence.

N’Guigmi: a hotspot of terrorism in the Diffa region

N’Guigmi, a garrison town in the Diffa region, borders Lake Chad—a vast water body shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Since 2009, the area has become a stronghold for armed factions, including both Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

This strategic location has made it a frequent target for militant operations, with security forces constantly engaged in counterterrorism efforts to maintain control.

Casualties and military response

According to a local resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, the attack resulted in the deaths of approximately ten soldiers. The assailants also suffered casualties, and the army has launched follow-up operations to track down the remaining fighters.

Social media reports from residents corroborated the toll, stating that ten military personnel and four national guard members were killed in the assault. While official statements are pending, the Nigerien News Agency (ANP) acknowledged the fatalities, confirming that the victims died in an attack carried out by Boko Haram elements on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.
