The 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day was marked by a significant diplomatic gesture from Washington, as President Donald Trump conveyed a message to King Mohammed VI reaffirming the United States’ stance on the Western Sahara dispute.

In his congratulatory note, Trump made clear that the U.S. recognizes Morocco’s full sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorses the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the most viable framework for a lasting and equitable resolution. «The United States is unequivocal: we acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious, credible, and realistic basis for a just and sustainable solution,» he stated.

Highlighting the urgency of resolving the conflict, the U.S. president emphasized that alternative approaches only maintain the existing deadlock, which he described as «unacceptable.» Trump asserted that the dispute must be resolved without delay, and pledged that the U.S. would continue to drive progress toward that end.

Beyond the Western Sahara issue, Trump’s message celebrated the «250 years of American-Moroccan friendship,» describing the bilateral relationship as a bond «built on mutual trust and respect.» He praised King Mohammed VI’s «wise leadership,» calling him a «pillar of stability» in the region.

The American leader also commended Morocco’s contributions to regional security, particularly its role in countering extremism and safeguarding shared interests. He pointed to the Abraham Accords as a testament to Morocco’s commitment to fostering peace and stability across the Middle East and North Africa.

In a forward-looking move, Trump announced plans to deepen cooperation with Morocco to strengthen security in the Sahel region, underscoring the importance of joint efforts in combating shared threats.
