Ousmane Sonko, the influential leader of the ruling Pastef party and current Prime Minister of Sénégal, was greeted by hundreds of exuberant supporters during a significant walking tour, or “grande randonnée pédestre,” on Sunday, May 17. This event was meticulously organized by the departmental coordination of his political movement.

Dressed entirely in white, the Prime Minister was first met by an ecstatic crowd, whose chants of «Sonko Président» echoed through the streets. He subsequently engaged in a direct interaction with the masses, immersing himself in the jubilant atmosphere. Several prominent members of the party actively participated in the march, including the Mayor of Dakar, Abass Fall, and the Minister of Higher Education, Daouda Ngom. The procession commenced at the iconic Place de la Nation and concluded at the Rond-point Jet d’eau.  

The theme of this walking event was «Dakar en marche derrière le Pros» (Dakar marching behind the Pros). Its primary objectives included celebrating citizen participation and fostering peaceful collective action, as well as consolidating unity around the political project championed by Sonko. This comes as the party is diligently preparing for the elective congress of its president, scheduled for June 6, 2026.
