Expressing profound gratitude to his peers for the trust placed in him and the newly elected bureau, including its deputy rapporteur, the incoming president commended the spirit of harmony that characterized the establishment of the institution.

Addressing the most senior senator and all members of the chamber, he called for the cultivation of a robust community dynamic within the Senate. This dynamic, he emphasized, should be guided by a strong sense of responsibility, dignity, and the paramount interests of the nation.

According to Talon, collaborative efforts, consensus-building, and a convivial atmosphere must take precedence over any differences to ensure the effective functioning of the institution.

Pledging a commitment to national unity

Having faced accusations of undermining national unity during his two presidential terms, the first president of the upper house is now fully dedicated to leveraging this mandate to strengthen national unity, political stability, peace, and democracy in Bénin. He urged his colleagues to actively champion this shared national ambition.

Patrice Talon was elected as Bénin’s inaugural Senate president following a closed-door conclave held on Thursday, August 6. He will lead this first term alongside Louis Vlavonou, the former National Assembly president, who was elected Vice-President of the Senate. Alassane Seidou and Adidjatou Mathys will serve as Rapporteur and Deputy Rapporteur, respectively.
